In 1963 Rich Novak began working with Doug Haut, a close friend and local surfboard shaper, in various surfboard production shops around town. In their mid-to late 20's, Rich, Doug and Jay (Shuirman), started their own surfboard business, Solar Surfboards, driven by the idea that they would play as much as possible and work the shop only when the waves were not cooperating. But by 1969, Jay was attending college and had started a family, and the three friends had to search for steady and legitimate work. They parlayed their surfboard experience into distributing raw materials for surfboards, ultra-light sailboats, motorcycle fairings, and auto bodies. A new company called NHS (Novak, Haut, and Shuirman) was born in the back of their small shop on 41st Avenue in Santa Cruz.
